The heat claimed the lives of around 47,000 individuals in Europe last year.

In 2023, almost 47,000 Europeans lost their lives as a result of the extreme heat, with Britain placing seventh overall.

The southernmost countries on the continent were most severely affected by the fatal heat, according to research published by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal).

The planet experienced its hottest year ever last year. Living in the fastest-warming continent in the world, Europeans are increasingly at risk for health problems due to extreme heat as a result of climate change.

Despite the higher temperatures, the number of deaths from heat-related causes in 2023 is less than the 60,000 estimated deaths from the previous year.

But without initiatives to assist Europeans combat the heat, like early warning systems to guarantee elderly people receive support and improvements to general healthcare, experts said, it would have been eighty percent higher.
